Francqui Symposium in Gen

Francqui Symposium in Gen

Dr. Abraham Esteve-Núñez has been invited to give a keynote lecture at the 64th Annual Meeting of The International Society of Electrochemistry to be held in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico from 8 to 13 September.

The lecture is part of the Symposium 2: Sensing in Living Systems, a novel and current topic that is addressed for the first time in ISE Meetings. The symposium aims to present a broad overview on developments in electrochemical sensing systems and architectures for monitoring living cell activity, living microorganisms and plants, including medicine and clinical monitoring.

Madrid Science Week

Madrid Science Week

Bioelectrogenesis will participate with two activities in 13th Madrid Science Week. The first of these activities will be held on November 6 at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Alcalá, entitled Winogradsky Column: electrogenic bacteria and microbial ecology.

The second workshop will take place on November 13 at the facilities of IMDEA Water. Attendees will learn a new type of renewable energy based on the metabolic activity of microorganisms in natural environments.

The Science Week in Madrid is an activity aimed at all ages and levels of training, which is held every year in November. Attendance and participation in the activities is free. Its aim is to make available to the public the topics and issues of interest and concern, unveiling the research centers and the activities they performed as work spaces to improve our lives in the short and long term.

Bioelectrogenesis in Researchers’ Night

Bioelectrogenesis in Researchers’ Night

Bioelectrogesis group will join the Madrid events of Researchers’ Night for the fourth consecutive year. Hand in hand with IMDEA Agua, the group will offer an activity based on its research and aimed at an audience of 7-100 years. The event will be held next September 27 at the Royal Botanic Garden in Alcalá de Henares.

The experience consists of a demonstration to introduce the public to renewable energy sources based on the metabolic activity of environmental microorganisms.

Researchers’ Night is a EU event taking place every year on a single September night in about 300 cities all over Europe thar offers behind-the-scenes guided tours of research labs, interactive science shows and hands-on experiments or workshops. The events are supported by the European Commission as part of the Marie Curie Actions, which is an EU programme to boost European research careers.

4th International Conference on MFC

4th International Conference on MFC

Bioelectrogenesis group will be attending MFC4, the 4th International Conference on Microbial Fuels Cells, that will take place on 1-4 September in Cairns, Australia. After successful events organised by Pennsylvania State University (USA), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (Korea) and Wageningen University/WETSUS (The Netherlands) this is also the first meeting in the series to be supported and co-organised by the newly formed International Society for Microbial Electrochemical Technologies (ISMET).

MFC4 will be organised by The University of Queensland and held in the tropical city of Cairns in the far north of Queensland, Australia.

Bioelectrogenesis PI Dr. Abraham Esteve-Núñez will talk about ‘Full scale demonstration of a hybrid MET-constructed wetland for urban wastewater teçreatment: the AQUAELECTRA project”.

Prof. Bruce Logan, Penn State university, Prof. Korneel Rabaey, University of Ghent, and Prof. Lars Pieter Nielsen, Aarhus University, Denmark, are among the confirmed presenters.

Bioelectrosynthesis session in San Diego

Bioelectrosynthesis session in San Diego

The SIMB meeting will feature a Bioelectrosynthesis session, convened by Dr. Enrico Marsili from Dublin City University, Ireland. The invited speakers will present their latest findings in electrochemically active biofilms, bioelectrosynthesis of organic chemicals from low-cost substrates, and metabolic engineering of bioelectrosynthetic microorganisms. Dr. Esteve-Núñez will talk about one of the main challenges in bioelectrosynthesis that is the capacity of bacteria for accepting electrons from a conductive material.

The Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (SIMB) is a US-based professional society that promotes industrial research and cross-cutting communications between various applied disciplines and the corresponding industries. Selected poster and oral presentations will be published in a special issue of Journal of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology.
